This position will directly assist Instructor Dr. Benjamin Izar, in the laboratory of Dr. Kai Wucherpfennig, in performing scientific research tasks of varying complexity. In general, this individual will assist in the set up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results.


  • Set up, adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot equipment, including flow-cytometer, PCR/RT-PCR machines and others.
  • Clean, maintain and prepare supplies and work areas and may be responsible for ordering of supplies
  • Conduct standardized biological or biochemical tests and laboratory analyses, including the collection of information and samples from organic substances, such as cell lines, animals (mice) and human tissues and blood.
  • Isolate, identify and prepare specimens for examination.
  • Analyzes experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings
  • Handles mice, including injecting tumor cell lines, administer drug, measure animal features (weight, size) and tumor features (size, volume)
  • Participate in grant application process, manuscript preparation as co-author, present data to laboratory staff and possibly to external collaborators
  • Maintains detailed notebook of all work-related activities.
  • Monitors laboratory work to ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety information as well as the standard operation procedures specific to each laboratory.
  • May be responsible for the development, modification and improvement of experimental protocols and workflows
  • Uses computers, computer-interfaced equipment, robotics or high-technology applications to perform work duties.


  • Bachelor's Degree or higher required with a major in biology is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of information and techniques related to either biology, chemistry, or medicine is preferred, including experience working with mice, flow-cytometry, cell line work, virus production and transduction, DNA/RNA isolation from cell lines and human tissues, cloning (including design of oligos, sgRNAs etc), PCR/RT-PCR, Western Blotting), mouse intraperitoneal/intravenous injections, oral gavage, tumor harvesting and disaggregation.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
  • Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
