The Medical Laboratory Supervisor for Dana-Farber Community Cancer Care (DFCCC) in Lawrence is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting test results. The Laboratory Supervisor is also responsible for performing tests and reporting results to the providers for use in diagnosis, treatment and/or monitoring treatment of disease at least 50% of his/her time.


  • Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
  • Evaluates the competency of all testing personnel to ensure accurate test results. Evaluations are performed semi-annually during first year the tech is testing patient samples. Thereafter, evaluations are performed annually unless addition training is warranted.
  • Ensures with site office manager for coverage and direct patient care at sites as needed to cover for planned and unplanned absences
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable level of analytical performance are maintained.
  • Develops and implements quality control programs appropriate for testing performed / establishing acceptable levels of analytical performance and ensuring these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from specimen collection, analysis and reporting of test result.
  • Resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from established laboratory protocol.
  • Ensures that patient results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and test systems are functioning properly.
  • Plans, organizes and assigns duties for all Laboratory staff in coordination with local Office Managers
  • Oversees the development of in-service education and quality assurance/quality improvement programs for the department.
  • Responsible for all functions related to preparation for State and Federal lab inspections ; maintains continuous readiness.
  • Establishes and maintains communication between administration and the laboratory staff members
  • Contributes to the preparation and review of the laboratory budget, including capital equipment, subject to the review and approval of the DFCCC leadership and DFCI Lab management.


Reporting/Regulatory Duties

  • Works closely with Laboratory Management at DFCI
  • Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Participates in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques; plan, develop and train personnel to assure the highest levels of laboratory services.
  • Ensures laboratory participates in proficiency testing program approved by inspecting agencies. Initiates reports for lab-related events in the Safety Reporting System. Documents management review, investigation and follow-up for events occurring in the Hematology Laboratory.
  • Maintains and demonstrates proficiency in all testing performed in the Hematology lab; possesses sufficient expertise in abnormal morphology to serve as a reference/trainer for less experienced staff.
  • Complies with all policies regarding the confidentiality of patient information and the lawful use of any computerized patient data.
  • Demonstrates compliance with all elements of the DFCI Code of Conduct and Ethical Behavior, in particular as it applies to the billing and/or crediting of laboratory tests.
  • Ensures all laboratory records are retained according to inspection agencies.
  • Participates with Onco EMR oversight.
  • Oversees all laboratory information systems (LabDAQ) day-to-day functioning troubleshooting / implementation of upgrades.
  • Works closely with IT and LabDAQ on interface or other IT related issues
  • Scheduled travel to physician practice sites and DFCI main campus required


Bench Responsibilities

  • Performs capillary punctures and venous draws as appropriate for patient requiring the procedure.
  • Processes specimens utilizing established laboratory protocols and technical knowledge.
  • Runs, validates, and reports results of tests performed.
  • Performs and documents quality control, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting activities ensuring proper functioning of instrument and reagents.
  • Calibrates and maintains instrument according to established protocol / manufacturer recommendation.
  • Capable of identifying and correcting problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  • Orders lab supplies and assure that inventory is up to date.
  • Processes specimens for reference labs according to reference lab protocol/requirements.
  • Follows established safety practices when collecting and processing specimens.



  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or biology and 5-7 years experience in a clinical laboratory required; nationally recognized certification preferred (ASCP, NCA, HEW). Must be qualified as a Technical Supervisor (42 CFR 4931449) under CLIA regulation for High Complexity Testing.
