The Media Relations Specialist will work closely with the Director of Media Relations, the Associate Director of Media Relations and the Senior Media Specialist to support Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund publicity efforts.


This role of the Media Relations Specialist is to help maximize the visibility and reputation of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund to support a number of fundraising events and initiatives by helping strategize and secure print, online and broadcast media coverage. This role is an integral part of the communications team. The Media Relations Specialist will respond to media inquiries/requests and proactively pitch stories.


Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Generate publicity and provide on-site media relations for many Jimmy Fund/Development events and iniatives;
  • Pitch targeted events using through hometowners, patient partner releases and other appropriate channels;
  • Accompany local and national television crews and reporters to the Institute to facilitate filming;
  • Respond to and/or triaging news media inquiries;
  • Manage department’s use of media database Meltwater to generate/maintain media lists and track coverage, and provide advanced analytics report all Dana-Farber news, development events as well as a competitor analysis;
  • Supervise media relations interns by interviewing applicants, on-boarding interns, providing mentorship and training, managing workloads, and completing assessments as required by internship program and college/university;
  • Assist clinical media relations colleagues, as needed.


Candidate should also be able to work collaboratively and independently, to take initiative on projects, to communicate progress, and identify areas of improvement to work more efficiently and effectively. Also, should have demonstrated success proposing creative new ideas and initiatives to increase publicity.


The position will occasionally serve as the departments’ on-call representative in rotation with other team members.


Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, journalism, English, or writing.


3-4 years of professional communications experience. PR agency experience preferred.


Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).  Significant experience with word processing, database management, analytics reporting and familiarity with social media channels.


Strong writing skills, e.g., press releases, backgrounders, etc., that are clear, concise and in accordance with Associated Press style. Must also have well-honed editorial and proofreading skills.


A proven ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and to review and rearrange priorities on short notice.


A creative team player with an enthusiastic attitude who is willing to go “above and beyond” to help promote the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.


Eagerness to learn about public relations tactics and trends. Continue to advance industry fundraising, health care philanthropy knowledge and constantly looking for new ways to improve media results.
