The Mitsiades Laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Department of Medical Oncology), Harvard Medical School, in Boston focuses on the development of novel biologically-based therapies for hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. The work of our Lab has led to clinical development of several combination regimens used to treat patients with multiple myeloma. We look forward to recruiting a lab animal technician who will become an integral member of a multidisciplinary team of researchers working collaboratively on multiple cancer-focused projects. This Mitsiades Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, well trained, experienced, and knowledgeable lab animal technician with the expectations of semi-independent work in the development, maintenance, and treatment of mouse models; and demonstrating a comfort level with technical skills.

  • Humane care and handling of mice, perform technical and surgical procedures, peri-operative nursing care, record daily clinical observations, perform dose administration and sample collection.
  • Injecting cells to generate xenografts and administer investigational treatments.
  • Collecting and analyzing experiment data, sample collection and processing.
  • Train and assist other lab members in performing the above tasks.
  • Participate in team meetings for experimental planning.
  • Assist with reviewing and updating processes and SOPs as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • BS in Animal Science, or closely related field. 
  • Laboratory Animal Technician experience is required, various levels are being considered.
  • Comprehensive understandings of research animal care of mice, including ability of handling mice and observing them for general health and overall wellbeing.
  • Preferred is experience in, or ability to learn, several of the following techniques, including: IV, SQ, IP, Cardiac Punctures, Retro-Orbital injections and bleeds, Anesthesia using Isofluorane, Euthanasia using CO2, Necropsy, Harvesting of tissues.
  • Proper record keeping, exceptional attention to detail is a must.
  • Prior training in biological techniques such as liquid handling devices, cell culture, molecular biology, and/or animal models is a plus but not required.
  • AALAS technician certification at the ALAT or LAT levels is preferred but not required.

Other Skills:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with computers and standard application software.

Work Environment:

  • Animal facility standard laboratory settings
  • Full time / 40 hours
