The role of the Media Relations Specialist is to is to help maximize the visibility and favorability of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, helping to raise awareness of---and support for---the Institute’s life-saving mission of conquering cancer, and for its clinical care, research and fundraising activities


Specifically, the Media Relations Specialist is responsible for coordinating, developing and implementing proactive media relations efforts, with a special focus on video to promote the Institute as a top national comprehensive cancer center. This includes, but is not limited to:


  • Researching, writing, producing, editing and distributing video and audio news releases and video packages that highlight DFCI clinical and research developments, trends and other relevant topics.


  • Researching, developing and pitching story ideas to media.


  • Developing and managing strong relationships with key local and national television and radio reporters, editors, producers and photographers.


  • Researching, writing and distributing news releases to publicize journal-based clinical and basic science studies, and arranging and overseeing interviews and film/photo shoots.


  • Disemenating information to advocacy, patient and other relevant organziations to extend public relations activities beyond mainstream media, in conjunction with public and non-profit agencies and organizations.


  • Assisting with response acitvities as needed during internal or external crises/issues.


  • Responding to reporters’ requests, e.g., expert opinion on published studies, medical information, b-roll packages, etc.


Working closely with other members of the DFCI Department of Communications (writers, editors, digital specialists, marketing managers, etc.) to help create or support compelling content for DFCI’s social media and online properties.




Bachelor’s degree.


6+ years of media relations or electronic journalism experience; health care communications experience is preferred.


Well-honed video and audio production and editing skills, preferably developed at a media outlet, including significant experience with video and audio production and editing.

Strong writing skills and the ability to write copy, e.g., press releases, backgrounders, etc., that explains complex concepts in a clear, concise manner and is in accordance with Associated Press style. Must also have very solid editorial and proofreading skills.


Documented success in developing video packages and pitching story ideas to reporters, producers and editors.


A proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and to review and rearrange priorities on short notice.
