Reporting to the DFCI Senior Manager of Patient Financial Services (PFS), the Patient Accounting Manager coordinates the day-to-day activities and infrastructure of the Billing Department for three Physician hematology-oncology offices as well as the Blue Cross Hospital Outpatient Team at Dana-Farber.


  • Accountable for guiding the staff and ensuring metrics are met and often exceeded in both productivity and claims payment collections.
  • Will be consistently looked upon to take a pro-active approach and provide management with process improvement concepts and initiatives to improve staff engagement and productivity.
  • Expected to stay up-to-date on all current and impending payer policies, initiatives and industry trends.
  • Updates reception on changes in referral requirements, demographic & insurance information necessary for accurate registration and billing
  • Maintains department policies and procedures and ensures proper adherence by both self and staff.
  • Conducts Quality Assurance of work performed by PFS staff.
  • Coordinates staff trainings in accordance with claims follow up best practices.
  • Works across the Revenue Cycle with other Managers, Senior Managers and Directors to improve department relationships and interdependent processes.
  • Participates in cross functional work groups and provides feedback to the Patient Financial Services management and staff.
  • Tracks and trends denials to determine root causes and shares results with appropriate personnel to remediate issues going forward.
  • Generates aging reports; identifies problems with payers holding high receivable balances over 90 days.
  • Responsible for organizing work, setting priorities, time lines, and determining and obtaining the resources required to meet those priorities.
  • Allocates work and provides training and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Tracks department staff productivity; identifies opportunities for improvement through education, training, accountability.



  • College education preferred or a minimum of 5 years’ patient accounting experience in the follow up space. Prior managerial/supervisor experience required. Prior hospital and/or physician billing experience or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of third party regulations.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented and dependable.
  • Preferred experience working with third-party websites, Athena Health and Epic.
  • Excellent/professional communications skills including both verbal and written skills.
  • Team player, self-starter-leader, ability to train others, ability to establish priorities and direct others, ability to recognize and solve problems, ability to meet deadlines, ability to take direction & familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and payer regulations regarding medical billing compliance.
  • Must have experience working with HCFA 1500s and UB04’s.
  • Must have experience working with Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross and Other Commercial Insurance.
