Provides direct patient care to patients being treated at existing Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Network locations (in Weymouth, MA). The satellite cross coverage RN will be assigned to a satellite location on a time limited basis based on business needs including but not limited to staff vacancy, leaves of absences or patient volume. Requires travel and the ability to quickly assimilate to new environments and foster team relationships at each site. The satellite cross coverage nurse's responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. Provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. Provides staffing support across the DFCI satellite practices and is a member of each multidisciplinary care team. Effective communication and collaboration is required with physicians, co-workers and staff at the satellite practices, DFCI, host hospital, and other collaborating institutions and agencies. Requires travel and schedule flexibility along with clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills and an understanding of the principles and practices of clinical research. Requires travel to DFCCC Weymouth and South Shore locations. Reports to Senior Nurse Director, Satellites and Network Practices.

  • Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to patients and families.
    1. Implements nursing process:
      • Assesses patient and family needs.
      • Analyzes assessment data to develop and support clinically accurate diagnoses.
      • Plans care by establishing goals with measurable outcomes.
      • Implements the plan of care.
      • Evaluates the patient's response to interventions.
    2. Documents care according to Institute and regulatory agencies' requirements.
    3. Administers medications, which may include chemotherapy, and performs procedures safely and efficiently in accordance with Institute policy. May administer blood transfusions.
    4. Evaluates educational and psychological needs of patient and family, and incorporates identified needs into the plan of care.
    5. Educates patient and family regarding various aspects and treatment modalities of disease, which may include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. 
    6. Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS certification.
    7. Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care, and makes appropriate referrals.
    8. Complies with accepted standards of professional nursing practice, as well as with all licensure/registration requirements applicable to the nursing role.
    9. Adapts to site specific policies, procedures and processes, communicates variations to Senior Nurse Director.
  • Establishes rapport with patients and families from a variety of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
    1. Interacts with patients and families in a caring and compassionate manner respecting the need for privacy and confidentiality.
    2. Develops approaches to problem solving which meet the individual needs of the patients and families.
    3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care and support to the populations served.
    4. Fosters an environment that is sensitive to the needs of diverse populations, including but not limited to culture, ethnicity, gender, and age.
    5. Quickly builds relationships with patients across settings, supports the role of primary nurses..
  • Manages the environment of patient care.
    1. Monitors the environment of care with attention to patient safety, and assures compliance with regulatory agency standards
    2. Complies with Institute, Nursing and Patient Care Services, and unit policies, procedures, work rules and standards of conduct.
    3. Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001) in all aspects of professional practice.
  • Contributes to the formulation and achievement of goals on the units, within the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services, and the Institute.
    1. Assists in defining goals and developing systems and work processes for the units, the Division of Nursing and the Institute.
    2. Participates in program-based and divisional committees, councils, and initiatives.
    3. Demonstrates flexibility in setting and changing priorities. Accepts additional responsibilities as needed. 
    4. Participates in QA/QI projects for the units and the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.
    5. Supports research activities within the units, Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services, and the Institute.
  • Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team.
    1. Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with peers and co-workers. Effectively addresses and manages conflicts.
    2. Demonstrates effectiveness as a contributing member to the multidisciplinary health care team.
    3. Delegates as appropriate, and supervises assistive personnel in their provision of patient care.
    4. Collaborates with all satellite physicians, staff and primary nurses in coordinating flow and sharing care of patients in the infusion areas.
  • Seeks opportunities to foster professional growth.
    1. Identifies areas for professional growth. Formulates professional goals, objectives and methods for accomplishing these.
    2. Attends inservices, workshops and seminars. Shares information gained with colleagues.
    3. Facilitates professional growth of self and others by acting as a preceptor and mentor for new staff.
    4. Collaborates in preparing professional reports, articles and presentations for colleagues and the public. 
    5. Meets all annual evaluation requirements and competencies within the established time period.
    6. Pursues active membership in local and national professional organizations.


  • Licensed as a registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Baccalaureate degree required; baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year (or equivalent) of nursing experience, outpatient oncology and IV experience preferred.
  • Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred - OCN, AOCN, CPON
  • Must have a valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation to travel to and from the satellite locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and ability to make independent decisions.
  • Ability to function in a busy work setting with patients with complex needs.
