Overview

 

The Level II Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing technical support under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Level II technician works primarily in the retail outpatient pharmacy, but may also support any other satellite location.  Technician’s duties include preparing oral take home medications, manufacturing and compounding pharmaceutical products, inventory management, utilizing the various equipment and technology available in the pharmacy, performing drop-off and pick-up window duties, and performing various quality control tasks as assigned. In addition, the level II technician will participate in training and orientation of new technicians and pharmacy students.

 

 

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is opening a new outpatient cancer facility in September 2020 in Chestnut Hill. The new ambulatory center, located  at 300 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill, will provide much needed space for adult patient care to support our patient growth. Dana-Farber - Chestnut Hill will offer Clinical and Research Laboratory Services, Clinical Trials, Imaging, Infusion Services, Nutrition Support, Retail Pharmacy, Social Work, and Transfusion Services. This will be a multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art facility designed to maintain the same model of care that is currently given to our patients on our Longwood Campus.

 

Job Location:

Training for this position will start in June 2020 at our Longwood campus (450 Brookline Ave), and will transition to Chestnut Hill in September after opening. 

 

 

Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Prepares medications

  • Prepares all medications accurately
  • Works efficiently, able to maintain a steady workflow
  • Assembles medications and materials in a neat and organized manner
  • Demonstrates good aseptic technique
  • Participates in training and orientation of pharmacy technicians

 

Inventory management

  • Maintains adequate levels of stock medications and materials for assigned work area
  • Follow the outpatient pharmacy ordering and receiving procedures\
  • Participates in inventory management

 

Technology

  • Has working knowledge of and is able to use all technology required to perform functions of daily duties
  • Participate in training and orientation of new pharmacy technicians to technology
  • Identify when technology is not working properly and triage as appropriate

 

Participates in quality control

  • Cleans pharmacy hoods and related areas as required by policy and procedure
  • Identifies, removes, and replaces outdated medications/stock in pharmacy areas
  • Disposes of and documents non reusable medications consistently and appropriately
  • Maintains all required logs and documentation
  • Reviews prescriptions prior to and during fill to ensure they are accurate, making changes and/or suggesting how to resolve the issue to the pharmacist

 

Research pharmacy support

  • All research medications are dispensed to the patients appropriately
  • Sign out investigational medications following approved procedures

Performs technician duties at the drop-off and pick-up windows

  • Accurately perform the necessary duties at the drop-off and pickup window
  • Understands who customer (both external and internal) is and takes responsibility for customer satisfaction and loyalty
  • Sets an example of excellence in customer service to others

 

Participates in special projects

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or currently enrolled in an accredited entry-level degree program for pharmacy or related field
  • Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Registration as Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification required, with the exception of pharmacy students
  • Two to five years of pharmacy technician experience with at least one year of outpatient/retail experience
