  • Overview

    The role of the Oncology RN is focused on patient assessment, patient education, the coordination of care, administration of therapy, symptom management and supportive care for the Oncology and Hematology patients at Dana-Farber Community Cancer Care.


    • Promotes health care outcomes in concert with currently accepted clinical practice guidelines.
    • Applies evidence based practice in the development of teaching tools/programs
    • Assess learning needs and educate the patient and family in disease process, chemotherapy treatment plan, side effects, and side effect management
    • Reviews patient’s clinical status and laboratory values pre-treatment and consults with physician when appropriate
    • Verifies insurance coverage for all scheduled therapy
    • Obtains and tracks all prior authorizations
    • Has knowledge of chemotherapy/biotherapy protocols.
    • Inserts peripheral IV catheters
    • Accesses Vascular Access Devices
    • Prepare and administers chemotherapy/biotherapy and supportive therapy in accordance with ASCO/ONS Guidelines.
    • Evaluates and determines need for Patient Advocate referral to assist uninsured/underinsured patients who are undergoing treatment.
    • Collaborates proactively with all interdisciplinary team members with a patient centered focus to facilitate and maximize patient healthcare outcomes.
    • Orders medications from supplier
    • Maintains accurate inventory of all medications
    • Assures patient adherence to oral chemotherapy and hormone therapy
    • Triages patient phone calls.       Evaluates patient responses to interventions and follows through to resolution of issues.
    • Serves as a resource to medical personnel in other health facilities, providing telephone consultation to engender optimal Oncology practices and knowledge among health care professionals caring for cancer patients.
    • Provides psychological support for patients and families.
    • Provides care that demonstrates sensitivity to patient diversity
    • Assists patients in identifying psychosocial needs and concerns and offers appropriate resources.
    • Knowledgeable about resources provided by practice and those that are available in the community
    • Works collaboratively with VNA and Hospice to provide for care at home.
    • Works collaboratively with Research Staff in caring or Research patients
    • Demonstrates excellent communication skills
    • Reviews superbills daily for accuracy
    • Assist providers with e-prescribing of prescriptions
    • Performs annual competency testing
    • Participates in mock codes biannually
    • Acts as a preceptor/mentor for new nurses
    • Schedules hood inspections biannually
    • Assists with medical procedures.
    • Performs dressing changes.
    • Performs Therapeutic Phlebotomies.
    • Performs EKGs.
    • Performs veni-puncture of lab specimens.
    • Orders medical supplies.
    • Orders educational brochures and keeps library organized.
    • Cleans pharmacy including chemotherapy hood.
    • Cleans/organizes infusion room.
    • Performs other duties as required.



    • Licensed as a registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
    • Baccalaureate degree required; baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred.
    • Minimum of 1 year (or equivalent) of nursing experience, experience in oncology preferred.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
