    The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is committed to providing outstanding departmental management to DFCI faculty engaged in research. The purpose of the Departmental Grants Management Specialist (DGMS) is to provide support to faculty managing finances of the faculty portfolio after the award (Post-Award). This position will provide financial information, guidance, analysis and support to Pediatric Oncology research faculty.  Post-Award activities include managing accounts associated with grants, gifts, strategic centers, and other types of funding.


    In addition to the responsibilities described below, this position may occasionally include assignment of special projects within the department, related to grants management and administration.



    • Upon award, works with the Pre-Award team, as well as Grants and Contracts and Research accounting to setup the project, and allocate personnel.
    • Reviews Notices of Award for any budgetary or other restrictions/requirements. Works with faculty to assure understanding of reporting and other requirements of PI.
    • Reviews budget adjustments, restrictions, required responses with faculty and ensures a timely response to the sponsor. 
    • Manages budget spending to guidelines, monitoring and reviewing allocation of research funds, grant balances and charges, ensuring appropriate use of funds under investigator control, both in terms of sponsor/external regulations and Institute policy. Calculates overhead and fringe benefit charges; purchases equipment; ensures payment of salaries; and generates spreadsheets of any necessary data.
    • Compiles and analyzes fiscal data; develops updates, disseminates accurate and complete financial information to ensure compliance with all requirements of externally funded programs, performs related duties as assigned.
    • Completes accurate financial projections for the assigned lab areas and programs under their responsibility.
    • Meets regularly with Principal Investigators to discuss financial outlook- including personnel
    • Works with multiple central areas including HR, Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Research Accounting, Special Funds and Research Administration as the main point of contact on all post award activities for assigned PI’s and program areas


    • 5+ years of related experience (pre-award or post-award or both) in an academic research environment preferred.
    • Ability to proactively set priorities and multi-task.
    • Meets high service excellence standards.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Ability to work within a team environment.
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
    • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
    • Maintains professional demeanor at all times.
    • Required computer skills include knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and Adobe. PeopleSoft experience is a plus.
