    Responsibilities

    This position is responsible for facilitating the department’s research program through management of the laboratory operations. Responsibility will include assistance with department administrative responsibilities in the laboratories; supervision of technical staff to manage and maintain good laboratory practice; and upkeep of various professional development activities within CIV. This individual will report directly to the Department Administrator.

     

    • Institute, maintain, and improve standard procedures for laboratory efficiencies, including monitoring laboratory expenditure. 
    • Responsible for overseeing efficient inventory maintenance and ordering of shared reagents and equipment.
    • Responsible for coordination and oversight of installation, maintenance, and repair of research equipment. Responsible for obtaining quotes and/or supporting research staff in their efforts to obtain quotes and prepare equipment purchase requisitions. Acts as primary purchase and installation contact for group or department for all types of equipment, including computers. Maintains records related to equipment and maintains database of repair and maintenance contracts for equipment. Supports research staff in obtaining assistance, renovation, or repairs from the Maintenance Department. Coordinates and supports telephone installation or moves. Assists financial coordinators on matters related to purchasing, shipping and receiving.
    • Ensure good laboratory practice directly or indirectly through indirect supervision of technicians, trainees and staff.
    • Administrative duties including helping organize various professional development activities throughout the department. This includes and is not limited to setting up for seminars and/or talks, helping organize food, etc.
    • Responsible for managing efficient and effective administration of laboratory protocols and research materials/stocks. 
    • Create training plans for CIV employees on how to properly accomplish many common lab tasks. This includes but is not limited to creating a best practice for tissue culture, waste disposal, and fume hood use.
    • Assist PI with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees with proper training plans and by working closely with the department administrator.
    • Ensures all lab staff are compliant with DFCI, NIH and sponsor mandatory trainings.
    • Assist PI in monitoring, enabling and facilitate collaborations with other programs.
    • In wet labs, oversees the glassware maintenance process, supervising Laboratory Assistants. May be put in charge of a building-wide glassware core. May oversee special research operations support for group, such as media preparation. Oversees proper disinfection and removal of laboratory waste as needed. Ensures clear corridors and supports safety office on matters related to lab, fire, and biosafety. Supports radioactive materials monitoring and inventory documentation and coordinates monitoring equipment maintenance and calibration. Responsible for developing and carrying out department system for matters related to shipping and receiving.
    • Upkeep of department equipment workbooks, CAMS backup lists, and computer workbooks.
    • System for matters related to shipping and receiving.
    • Facilitate research operations by coordinating or carrying out tasks related to equipment, materials stocks, facilities, and shipping and receiving.
    • Supports shipping and receiving for group or department.
    • Assists with the maintenance of laboratory stocks, such as plastic- and glassware.
    • May carry out special research operations support
    • May assist financial coordinators on matters related to purchasing, shipping and receiving.
    • In wet labs, carries out disinfection and removal of laboratory waste as needed.
    • Carries out or oversees cleaning and maintenance of glassware and plasticware stocks.
    • Autoclaves laboratory reagents and waste.
    • Active intellectual involvement in research projects is encouraged.

    Qualifications

    Experience:

    • Experience in laboratory and research operations of 3-5 years is required. 
    • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and solid writing skills preferred 
    • Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance and record keeping
    • Exceptional people management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task to enable many concurrent projects in a complex, fast paced environment. 
    • Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions. 
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort in working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints; openness to new ideas. 
    • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
