  • Overview

    The talented scientist and scientific writer who will take this position will facilitate an active research program in cancer genomics, therapeutic discovery, and the cancer microbiome. The position encompasses research strategy and planning, project management, and laboratory communications, including presentation and grant development. He/she should have outstanding oral and written communication skills and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team- and service-oriented environment. This individual will report directly to the principal investigator.

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with the principal investigator, laboratory members and administrative colleagues to lead the development, execution and submission of scientific research proposals and programs, including:
    1. Maintaining a current knowledge of funding opportunities and identifying sources of research funding.
    2. Formulating strategic plans for research funding.
    3. Playing a leading role in writing the research proposal, in collaboration with the principal investigator.
    4. Planning the financial strategy for each grant.
    5. Compiling all necessary documentation for grant application submissions, working with the grants managers and principal investigator.
    6. Maintaining a database of relevant literature references.
    7. Liaising with funding agencies (government, corporate or private foundations) from initial contact through receipt of funding, to writing progress and final reports.
    • Coordinate with the principal investigator and laboratory members on the writing and submission of letters of support/recommendation, grant progress reports, and other research-related communications.
    • Assist laboratory members in writing and editing manuscripts and grant and fellowship applications, and contribute to their professional development.
    • Work with the principal investigator to manage large collaborative projects with academic or industry partners.
    • Manage, update and cultivate the laboratory’s website. This could serve as a platform for creative scientific expression and knowledge dissemination e.g. writing opinion pieces on important questions in cancer research, highlighting the laboratory’s research contributions and impact on the field, providing links to important resources and research datasets, etc.
    • Coordinate Material Transfer Agreements, intellectual property filings, technology disclosure and transfer, and manage and update animal and human subjects protocols.
    • Other duties, as assigned by the principal investigator, or as the work evolves.

    Qualifications

    • PhD in a field of biological sciences. Post-doc and additional leadership experience welcomed.
    • Excellent writing and communications ability. Grant writing experience is a plus.
    • Ability to assimilate and convey diverse scientific concepts to a variety of scientific and public audiences.
    • Enjoys working with independent thinking and initiative.
    • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of scientific and administrative colleagues.
    • Excellent people management and organizational skills, with the capability to prioritize and complete multiple concurrent projects in a complex, fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the capacity and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort with working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints; openness to new ideas.
    • Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem-solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem or opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.
    • Curiosity, love of science and commitment to the advancement of science.
