    Exciting and challenging opportunity to have a direct impact on patients and families facing a cancer diagnosis and the burden of pharmacy expenses related to their care.  This position is ideal for a skilled, thoughtful individual who is interested in utilizing their problem- solving skills to meet the needs of adult patients and their families. This position is responsible for delivery of concrete resource services to adult patients in need of pharmaceutical assistance. The Pharmacy Resource Specialist is a critical member of the multidisciplinary team and collaborates with providers and staff to assist patients in securing pharmaceutical assistance for treatment-related co-payments and medication costs. 




    • Responds directly to patient, family, staff, and provider requests for patient pharmacy assistance, mostly by phone but with some in-person contact
    • Conducts an assessment of financial need and program eligibility
    • Identifies co-pay assistance, free medication, or alternative insurance options depending on the patient’s individual situation
    • Provides education and assistance to patients with pharmacy assistance application processes, including completing applications, providing necessary documentation, and obtaining necessary provider signatures
    • Obtains and maintains SHINE training and certification requirements to help support Medicare patients with pharmacy resource support needs
    • Communicates and collaborates with colleagues within Patient and Family Programs and Services, as well as other Dana-Farber departments, including Social Work Pharmacy, Billing Customer Service, and Access Management
    • Conducts consistent follow-up with patients, foundations, pharmaceutical patient assistance programs to ensure timely processing of requests, to determine outcome of application process and communicate these outcomes to the multidisciplinary care team
    • Communicates and collaborates with pharmacy assistance programs, insurance companies, Medicare, Mass Health, and non-profit agencies to secure timely pharmacy benefits for patients
    • Maintains timely, accurate statistics, records of patient contact, and correspondence with pharmacy assistance programs, insurance companies, Medicare, and non-profit agencies
    • Monitors the ever-changing landscape of concrete pharmacy resources and regularly updates department materials
    • May coordinate and lead pharmacy resource information update sessions on assigned disease centers for social work staff, and, as requested, for other departments. 
    • May help to onboard and supervise a student intern(s)
    • May serve on a committee relevant to the Pharmacy Resource Specialist role
      Provides coverage for other Pharmacy Resource Specialists within the office as needed


    • We will consider licensed pharmacy technicians or candidates who have a bachelor’s degree with related experience
    • Experience working in the area of specialty pharmacy, as well as knowledge of pharmaceutical assistance programs
    • 3-5 years experience in health industry-related field recommended
    • Ability to follow work processes related to securing pharmaceutical assistance programs, including guiding patient and/or family in application process.
    • Familiarity with forms applicable to pharmacy assistance programs and capable of guiding patients and/or families through successful completion of applications. 
    • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
    • Strong attention to detail and excellent follow-through
    • Computer and data management proficiency
    • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with others, including patients and families, professional staff, stakeholders, outside organizations, and the community at large
    • Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and exercise independent judgment. 
    • Ability to incorporate principles of inclusion and diversity into Pharmacy Resource Office activities
    • Sense of humor and the desire to work collaboratively as a team
