    Reporting to the Administrative Director of the Clinical Laboratory, this position plays a key role in the business management of the clinical laboratory. The Business Manager will be working closely in a collaborative model with the medical and administrative leadership of the laboratory for the effective and efficient fiscal operation of the laboratory. This role provides high level business, analytical, project management, and financial integrity assurance to enhance and optimize laboratory test billing and compliance for tests performed in the Dana-Farber Laboratory as well as the extensive reference laboratory billing menu. The Business Manager will be responsible for identifying and planning and managing effective billing in accordance with laboratory financial goals.

    Responsibilities

    • Oversee all aspects of financial and business analytics; develop and maintain key metrics and dashboard reports that will regularly inform leadership of laboratory financial performance
    • Develops financial performance objectives and ensures successful implementation
    • Leads laboratory send out budget management; identifies and manages initiatives to enhance cost effectiveness and cost efficiencies for a budget of 8-10 million dollars of send out tests
    • Directs the overall billing operation for procedures performed by, or sent out by, the laboratory
    • Ensures reference laboratory invoices are accurate and processes for timely payment
    • Performs and documents routine audits for billing compliance
    • Work with Administrative Director and Purchasing to develop and maintain contracts with reference laboratories; communicates with laboratory operations and quality manager on quality of reference laboratory services
    • Leads the effort, working with the team of laboratory information systems, laboratory control manager, and DFCI billing department to manage quality control processes, including change control, to ensure complete and accurate billing from the laboratory information system
    • Develop and maintain up to date knowledge of trends in billing and compliance relative to laboratory billing
    • Develop and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with internal and external clients, business partners, and vendors with regards to laboratory services
    • Under direction of laboratory leadership and institutional contracting officers, consults and participates in the negotiation of contracts and other agreements impacting expense, reimbursement, or revenue
      • Work with the office of general counsel, revenue integrity, and administrative laboratory leadership to assure compliant billing practices
      • Perform complex financial analyses and present results to leadership; coordinate regular financial reports to leadership
      • Recognize and devise strategies to improve financial performance
      • May be asked to manage or participate in special projects
      • Perform all other duties as required.

    Education: B.A./B.S. in laboratory science or related field. Business and laboratory operations experience strongly preferred.

    Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in clinical laboratory and operations. Knowledge of laboratory information systems and billing systems and compliance preferred.
