  • Overview

The generation, management, and interpretation of molecular data across the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and its collaborators across Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital is critical for the advancement of precision oncology. This newly formed position will spearhead product management of the suite of projects that enable molecular testing within DFCI, including our ordering and Lab Information Management System (LIMS); our molecular pathology sign-out system; our variant knowledgebase; and our molecular data warehouse.

We seek a hands-on product manager to spearhead the ongoing development and maintenance of software and data products across the suite of products within bioinformatics. This will require working both with Informatics staff and leadership to manage stakeholder communication and directly with the community of Molecular Pathologists, Laboratory and Accessioning Staff, and Informatics staff involved with different stages of the data pipeline to understand needs. The Genomics Software Product Manager will be part of the DFCI Informatics product management and design team, and will focus on the product management needs of the Informatics department’s Bioinformatics & Data Science group.

    • Develop and maintain a roadmap of platform needs across all molecular testing within DFCI. Solicit requirements from stakeholders across the Institute, working with Bioinformatics leadership to prioritize and size needs, and keep stakeholders informed of the roadmap and ongoing development.
    • Oversee the implementation and continued build-out/deployment of Clarity, DFCI’s vendor LIMS solution and its interaction with OncoTracker, DFCI’s in-house molecular ordering and tracking software.
    • Compile requirements and lead build/buy decision for molecular pathology sign-out solution. Ensure the successful launch and continued evolution of molecular pathology product.
    • Lead DFCI’s new Molecular Shared Warehouse (MSW), including development of APIs that enable access to source and target databases, rules for harmonizing molecular data across multiple tests and versions, and assisting downstream consumers of MSW with integration of data for various purposes.
    • Identify a solution that meets DFCI’s molecular knowledgebase needs, with a focus on molecular pathology, and acknowledgement of the desire for a similar solution across medical oncology. Ensure content and technical specifications align with other components of the Molecular Platform.
    • Document requirements and relay to technical team via product roadmap, product backlog, user stories, and issue tracking tool.
    • Thoroughly document and quality control all features, maintaining a list of expected inputs and outputs for each feature. Write detailed functional test plans that cover not only the basic functionality, but also include edge, boundary and odd case scenarios. Drive technical staff to build automated tests where possible that validate for non-sensical data scenarios based on scientific expertise.
    • Work with development teams in agile process, driving sprints by ensuring team is building the right thing at the right time. Design and run smoke tests for non-automatable functions that verify functionality, especially to confirm that a release works.
    • Maintain end user documentation of application functionality and data dictionaries.
    • Collaborate with others in the product management domain such as User Experience Designers to deliver prototypes, wireframes, and GUI designs. Serve as a resource for molecular data to product managers in related spaces such as research data delivery and clinical decision support.

    • Background in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Cancer Biology, or related field with 5+ years in cancer research or clinical genetics, or equivalent experience
    • 3+ years working as a software product manager
    • 3+ years’ experience working in precision medicine or with research around biomolecular data. Knowledge of cancer genomics data sets a plus (e.g. COSMIC, GENIE, GDC, TCGA, OncoKB, CIViC, MyCancerGenome)
    • 3+ years’ experience analyzing/working with data using SQL, Python, Perl, etc. and understanding of database design preferred

    • Strong communication and organization required, with the ability to distill complex scientific topics into an easily digestible format
    • Technical skills to enable data exploration and guidance of development team about nuances of molecular data
    • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer support
    • Proven ability to effectively translate business requirements to functional requirements
    • Requires minimal direction from leadership and possesses the ability to learn quickly
    • Ability to cooperatively and effectively work within a team
