    At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), the Director, Data Warehouse and Data Architecture will be a critical member of the Informatics and Analytics leadership team, supporting the development and implementation of our enterprise data warehouse and its underlying data architecture in support of DFCI’s mission to improve cancer care and research.  This role requires significant hands-on technical skills, plus leadership and communication skills, and solid understanding of healthcare analytics, data warehousing, and DFCI’s core business functions. 


    The primary responsibilities of this role are two: (1) integrate vocabulary/terminology, requirements, and architectural constraints from multiple domains (research, clinical, operations) to produce combined data models and an integrated enterprise data architecture, and (2) establish and oversee excellent data warehouse support services, serving as the primary liaison for users in the Informatics & Analytics team and across DFCI, to ensure appropriate needs analysis, effective technical implementations, reliable data delivery and exceptional data quality and usability. Secondary responsibilities include facilitating the technical development and implementation activities related to setting up and operating the new DFCI data warehouse (DW).


    Given this role is new to DFCI and will require significant visibility, the role will report initially to the SVP of Informatics and Chief Health Information Officer, with two important matrix relationships to the Technical Director of Informatics Engineering and the Vice President of Analytics. Other key stakeholders will include the Senior Director of Bioinformatics and Data Science, the Director of Research Data Services, and the Partners Healthcare DFCI-site CIO. This position will work with the Director of Research Data Services and the technical team to implement policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of all warehouse data and supporting applications. As such, it is expected that the individual will understand healthcare data warehousing concepts and has experience in integrating data from healthcare systems.  The focus areas of this work will be broad and include obtaining and integrating data from financial, administrative, research and clinical systems.








    This role oversees the implementation of different aspects of the Informatics & Analytics strategy:

    1 - Data integration strategy


      • Data Warehouse design, implementation & operation
      • Harmonization of Research/Clinical/Operational concepts and data types

    2 - Policies and procedures of data warehouse access


    3 - Develop a support function (Informatics & Analytics team and DFCI users in general).                     

    The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:Strategic design of the DW to support Informatics strategic initiatives


    • Work jointly with the Director of Data Services, senior Data Services technical staff, the Technical Director, and Analytics team leads to develop and maintain a reliable and high-performance data warehousing environment.
    • Act as a liaison for the data services to provide support to various teams across the institute including Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA), Clinical Research Analytics, Clinical Curation systems, and other groups
    • Support the Health Catalyst engagement for development of the new DFCI Data Warehouse and the implementation of the Informatics and Analytics Data Strategy. Provide written and oral communication on the overall status of implementation of these activities.
    • Work cooperatively with other Informatics teams to develop strategic and tactical plans to facilitate and coordinate the delivery of technical services.


    Data and Terminology Management

    • Oversees integration of data models and definitions from multiple DFCI areas into a combined data architecture to serve the enterprise. In this aspect, the successful candidate will work closely with the head of Informatics Product and Architecture and the Director of Research Data Services.
    • Responsible for data acquisition and maintaining relationships with DFCI operational affiliates to facilitate data sharing.
    • Develops detailed technical project plans, and manages deliverables to ensure that projects are delivered on time and with high quality.
    • Directs the development of manual and automated data analysis and quality assurance processes that will ensure the efficient delivery of high quality data.
    • Works jointly with Analytics customers and all Informatics areas to identify and implement technologies and processes that meet key business needs, including but not limited to terminology, ontologies, documentation and data quality
    • Manages legacy technologies and platforms need to support research, clinical and operational needs – Informatica, tidal, and legacy data stores. Works with DFCI and PHS infrastructure groups to ensure appropriate system performance, security and data backups.

    Management and Training Functions


    • Makes recommendations to analytics users across the institute regarding data structure, data organization, data access and use of data for analytics
    • Manages relationships with key source system contacts, and source system subject matter experts
    • Coordinates the development, organization and maintenance of training modules for the data systems for analytic users with the Analytics teams covering clinical, research operations and operations
    • Develops an analytics user support function and inform development of the new DFCI Data Warehouse, including initial development of extraction/integration routines, as well as the on-going production operations and maintenance.


    Access, Policy & Security

    • Develops processes and workflows to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with corporate policies as well as laws and regulations governing patient data.
    • Manages relationships with vendors, including performance expectations and issue resolution.
    • Leads the development of processes and procedures that ensure not only that data is only accessed by appropriate users, but also that all DFCI policies and external regulations are complied with.


    People Management

    Hires, manages, and mentors team of data architects, data analysts and data/ETL developers





    Minimum Qualifications


    • Direct experience building and managing a data warehouse and supporting its customers
    • Thorough knowledge of state of the art data warehouse principles and techniques
    • 3+ years of direct experience developing and supporting business intelligence and analytics platform(s)
    • 5+ years managing database warehousing and ETL operations teams
    • 7+ years of hands-on database engineering
    • Served as lead architect, information architect, lead engineer, or scrum master for successful scientific / analytical solutions
    • MS in software engineering, computer science, medical informatics, or a related field
    • Broad technical background with hands-on experience and proficiency in modern analytics platform technologies, including noSQL and modern programming languages.
    • Experience leading Agile project management

    • Expert knowledge of relational database technologies like Oracle and SQL Server as well as NoSQL technologies
    • Experience with ETL tools, such as SSIS and Informatica is strongly preferred.
    • Experience with medical/clinical data exchange standards, such as FHIR and HL7
    • Experience working with “big data” types, such as text, imaging and device data, is strongly preferred.
    • Ability to communicate, written and verbally, analytical concepts in business terms to executive levels of management
    • Ability to consolidate themes in order to maximize resources
    • Ability to identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, drive clear decisions
    • Ability to build consensus and influence stakeholders to obtain buy-in
    • Ability to manage multiple projects of varying complexity in a dynamic environment where priorities are frequently changing

    Working Environment

    • Professional environment, some local (Longwood Campus) travel required for face-to-face meeting at other DFCI sites



    • This role will supervise of the Data Warehousing team, initially 4 direct reports, plus 3 matrix reports.


    Fiscal Responsibility


    • Responsible for efficiently managing budgets for technology, consulting staff and maintenance.
