    The Senior Writer is a member of the Donor Relations team within the Division of Development & the Jimmy Fund and works collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the Division and Institute to research and write donor materials on behalf of Dana-Farber’s President and CEO. The Senior Writer’s portfolio includes writing formal remarks, speaking points, or speeches; correspondence, acknowledgement letters, and other documents that serve to acknowledge, recognize, steward, and cultivate Dana-Farber’s generous donor base and prospects.

    The Senior Writer is responsible for assisting the entire department with reaching financial goals.

    • Research and draft donor- and fundraising-related materials for the President and CEO, including speaking points and remarks for donor events, acknowledgements, condolence, congratulatory, and other correspondence in email, letter, or note form, prepared responses to panel questions for donor events, program book letters, and more;

    • Review and edit all donor- and fundraising-related materials prepared for the President and CEO, including those prepared by colleagues within the Division, to ensure they:

    • Reflect the voice and priorities of the President and CEO;

    • Are accurate, researched, fact-checked, and proofed;
    • Share knowledge regarding information related to the President as requested by colleagues;
    • Communicate to high level donors (individuals, corporations, foundations, organizations, trusts) with an appropriate tone and style for the President and CEO;
    • Communicate complex scientific topics in cancer research in a clear, precise, and compelling way;
    • Attend presidential speaking engagements on a regular basis to learn the style and preferences of the President and CEO; adjust future assignments based on learnings;
    • Monitor and analyze what makes Dana-Farber unique and stay up-to-date on advances, changes, news, and trends related to Dana-Farber, cancer research, patient care, public health, and medicine to ensure these points are appropriately addressed and articulated by the President and CEO;
    • Proactively review the schedule of presidential meetings, speaking engagements, and major communications to ensure timely delivery of assignments;
    • As requested, take on special writing assignments;
    • Assist in the refinement and documentation of procedures regarding writing for and requesting writing projects for the President and CEO;
    • Meet with the President and CEO as requested;
    • Assume other duties as necessary.



    • None. Reports to the Associate Director, Stewardship, Donor Relations; takes direction and guidance from the President and CEO, Senior Vice President for Development, the Associate Vice President for Development Marketing, and the Assistant Vice President for Donor Relations.
    • The position has a considerable amount of autonomy in decision-making and in completing work-related tasks.




    • Bachelor’s degree and at least 7-10 years’ related experience, preferably in a development setting



    • Superior writing, including a comfort with science writing preferred, and project management skills required
    • Must be effective in working with wide audiences, including the highest level of Dana-Farber constituents and senior members of Dana-Farber leadership
    • Strong customer service, verbal communications, organizational skills, proof-reading skills, and attention to detail required
    • Must be able to meet all deadlines
    • An ability to maintain the utmost discretion and diplomacy in interacting with high-level individuals and maintain confidences at all times is essential
    • Ability to balance multiple projects, including urgent and unplanned requests






    Office located in typical office setting. Some early-morning, evening, and weekend work required. Local travel may be required. Some use of personal vehicle for business purposes may be required. Works collaboratively with staff from Development and Jimmy Fund, Communications Department, and Office of the President.
